What Mozambique can teach Luxembourg about disability

In Mozambique, Handicap International has helped to set up an inclusive digital startup incubator – the first of its kind. Young people with disabilities are using it to launch their own businesses and train the next generation of digital entrepreneurs. What if they were the ones to lead the way in Luxembourg?

"Before I set up my business, many people thought that someone with a disability wasn't capable of running a business, " says Thelma Felix Avano, 24. The young woman was able to set up her food business thanks to the "VaMoz Digital!" project, a business incubator supported by Handicap International in Mozambique. "Today, thanks to my business and the support I've received, I've been able to prove them wrong. The incubation programme has taught me how to run my business, helped me better understand my customers' needs and developed my skills as an entrepreneur. It has changed the way my family and community see me. My aim now is to grow my business and become a role model for other people with disabilities. I'd like them to look at my journey and think: 'I can succeed too.' People with disabilities have the ability to set up, run and grow their own businesses. It's important to overcome prejudices, to trust us and to give us the same opportunities as everyone else."
