"Tough, but warm"

Christian Weis has been the new mayor of Esch/Alzette since 2023. In this interview, the CSV politician talks about the change of power, major projects such as Rout Lëns and Metzeschmelz, the cultural year and why it's best to visit the Minette metropolis yourself.

Somehow, people in Esch are friendlier than in the capital. When our photographer almost lies down on the ground during the photo shoot with the mayor in Alzettestraße to take a photo of Christian Weis from this perspective, an elderly lady stops and asks us if the man is unwell and if she can help. Wow! The city really is better than its reputation.

Lëtzebuerger Journal: Without your predecessor Georges Mischo's move into government, you would never have become mayor in 2023. How do you rate the resignation of your party colleague?

Christian Weis: Together with Georges Mischo and a few others, we worked our way up from the opposition. I don't want to comment on Mischo's resignation. That is his decision, but the decisive factor here was of course the sports museum.

The CSV has Mischo to thank above all for turning the eternally red Esch into a black-blue-green city after the 2017 municipal elections.

Georges Mischo was a motivator. He galvanised people to overturn the old coalition. That is to his great credit.
