Successful baptism of fire at the Human Rights Council

The Grand Duchy has just completed three years as a member of the United Nations human rights body. An intense experience that resulted in a solid record from a diplomatic point of view.

"During these three years on the Human Rights Council, Luxembourg has endeavoured to contribute to the design of a better world through the full enjoyment of human rights by all. (…) It was both a responsibility and an honour for us to have been able to serve alongside you on the Human Rights Council With these words, Marc Bichler, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Luxembourg to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, bid farewell on behalf of his team on 9 December, the last official day of Luxembourg's term of office at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC).

It was a term of office that will go down in Luxembourg's diplomatic memory, not just because it was the very first, but because the Grand Duchy has no reason to be ashamed of its entry into the big league. Having been confined to the role of observer at the UNHRC until now, it has made good use of its right to vote and, above all, to speak as a member of the UNHRC, having already won over the world during its term of office on the UN Security Council in 2013–2014. This mandate in Geneva is more than just another footnote on his diplomatic CV, and the Luxembourg team was not there to get results during these three years.
