Kristina Shatokhina - Holding architectural heritage to account
By Sherley De Deurwaerder, Lex Kleren
Demolishing old buildings to make room for high-end real estate? For Kristina Shatokhina, Luxembourg would do well to value what it already has. At the "Our New Housing" exhibition at Luxembourg Center for Architecture (Luca), the architect and PhD candidate had the chance to talk to the Grand Duke about what too often goes unseen in the country's approach to heritage and housing.
When we meet Kristina Shatokhina outside a café in Esch-Belval, she's waiting for us with her current read in hand: The Need for Roots (1949) by French-Jewish philosopher and mystic Simone Weil. Asked about her choice, the 24-year-old lifts it up with a playful glint in her eye. "I have the most beautiful job in the world where I get to be paid for reading."
