In Tun Tonnar's studio in Bonnevoie, guitars meet beats, seriousness meets irony - and father meets son. Serge and Tun Tonnar not only tell us about their music, but also about attitude and the headwinds they face. A double portrait.
Tun Tonnar welcomes us to his studio in Bonnevoie, so precisely where singers and musicians normally come and go in a steady stream. In the adjoining kitchen, it still smells slightly of (the) fish that the 31-year-old had fried for himself the night before. He makes us a coffee, without sugar and milk of course – it's healthier that way.
His father Serge hasn't arrived yet, so Tun takes the opportunity to play us a new, as yet unreleased song by the Luxembourgish rapper Shania Kraemer, whom he produces. We recently wrote a portrait on her, and he regularly collaborates with her. And yes: Tun is anything but innocent of the very explicit lyrics (keyword: "Pussy Sommelier").
Then comes his father Serge, whom we know from way back. Luxembourg is small, and in the nightlife scene we've crossed paths from time to time – albeit usually somewhat tipsy.
We had been meaning to talk to both of them for a long time. So why not do it together? And since we're already sitting together in a studio, we, just for fun, record a Luxembourgish cover version of the Beatles' Let It Be before the actual interview: Serge on piano and singing the refrain, Tun on lead vocals and us on guitar – without any chords, of course, just as we've been doing for decades with plenty of effort and great enthusiasm. Incidentally, translating well-known songs into Luxembourgish is a hobby of Tun's, as you can see for yourself on TikTok, where the producer is extremely active under his alias Turnup Tun – the Let-It-Be video of the Luxembourgish Beatles is of course also available here and already has over 7.600 views.
The father-son relationship seems to be both very close and harmonious. They may be two very different musical temperaments, but they don't contradict each other, they rather fuel each other, at least on this afternoon.
