"A bit like cooking ..."

Those who compose classical music belong to an absolute minority. Women have been on the rise here for some years. Catherine Kontz from Luxembourg has been making a name for herself in contemporary music for some time now.

The first thing you notice about Catherine Kontz in direct conversation is her engaging manner, but above all her hearty laugh, which she makes use of often and with pleasure. Somehow quite different from what one would imagine a composer of contemporary music to be, since this genre and its representatives tend to have a reputation for being hard to understand and humourless. This may well be the case, but it is definitely not the case with Catherine Kontz. By the way, she says she doesn't know where she gets her infectious laugh, "probably from my mother".

Although she lives in London with her husband and two children, the 46-year-old is in Luxembourg almost more often this year than in her adopted English homeland, as she is involved in several projects for the European Capital of Culture Esch 2022.

The rainy days being reduced to four days

It is highly likely that Catherine Kontz will be visiting the Grand Duchy even more frequently in the coming months, as she will be taking over the direction of the rainy days festival at the Philharmonie for two years from 2023 – with the option of a further year – in which she has been involved as a composer for a long time.
