"The best is yet to come"

André Mergenthaler is bursting with ideas. He knew from an early age that he would one day become a musician, but that didn't prevent him from almost ending up working for the rubbish collection service. A portrait of what is probably Luxembourg's best-known cellist.

Now that's a special kind of photo session: when we asked André Mergenthaler to bring his cello with him, otherwise he might look a little naked in the photos without his instrument, we had no idea that he would not only pose with his instrument and pretend, but that he would also give a spontaneous sample of his skills.

The fact that the musical taster took place on the pedestrianised passerelle from the station to Bonnevoie, of all places, made things even more unusual, with most people stopping in amazement before continuing on their way.

In addition to his own improvisations, Mergenthaler also plays Bach and an unconventional interpretation of the Led Zeppelin mega-classic Stairway to Heaven. Further musical interludes follow on the roof terrace of the Journal and in our lift before he packs up his cello, which incidentally has the same iconic stripe pattern as Eddie van Halen's legendary guitar.

First observation: André Mergenthaler is a gifted musician who, like an old red wine, gets better and better with age. Second observation: If the musician had opted for a flute instead of his cello in his youth, he would have less to carry today.
