In times of crisis, poetry gives people support - it promotes empathy and helps to understand complex feelings. Two poets and a professor explain why engaging with poetry brings us closer together right now and what it reveals about our society.
When it comes to poetry, many people think of strict rhyming rules, memorisation at school and intellectual elites. Yet poetry is a play with language and an exploration of the deepest emotions. It forms a bridge between people and their experiences. In 1999, UNESCO launched World Poetry Day, which has been celebrated every year since then on 21 March.
