From San Diego to the Belgian Gaume, a Luxembourg resident has travelled a unique path to turn his passion for craft beer into a business. A crowdfunding campaign helped him get started in what has become a highly competitive sector.
The craft beer sector has developed strongly in Luxembourg in recent years. Consumer demand has changed, and even the big breweries have had to adapt their catalogues by diversifying their offer. Specialist shops and bars have opened their doors for enthusiasts, but on the production side, it's hard to get a foothold. Some enthusiasts are trying, however, with varying degrees of success. Buu Huynh is one of them. He has teamed up with his childhood friend, Benoît De Simone, to produce a local beer that is enjoying a small measure of success. Over the years, this hobby has turned into a business that could well see him go from banker to full-time brewer.
Brewing beer is more than just a hobby for Buu Huynh. This native of Belgium moved to the United States with a single ticket in his pocket, settling in San Diego on a student visa. But once there, he began to feel homesick… or rather for a local product: "I missed Belgian beers! It was very difficult, or at least very expensive, to get them in the United States, and I didn't like the local beers at all." So one evening, he started brewing his own beer with some friends. The beer burnt out, but he managed to recall the recipe and "his best beer ever brewed" was the result… But it's impossible to find the recipe, improvised at a party, far from professional standards.
