Eric Schumacher creates sculptural installations. He sometimes finds the materials he works with on the street, but often also in DIY stores. A portrait of the artist as a not-so-young man.
We first met Eric Schumacher three years ago, when we (and this time, for once, we doesn't just mean the writer of these lines, but also Journal editor-in-chief Melody Hansen) had just returned from a walk with the then Minister Taina Bofferding on the Escher Gaalgebierg as part of our summer series and, since we were already in Esch, spontaneously decided to pay a visit to the Konschthal, which had not yet officially opened at the time.
There, Konschthal director Christian Mosar introduced us to Eric Schumacher, who was busy setting up an exhibition(Ego Tunnel) by German artist Gregor Schneider. The 39-year-old is not only an artist, but also regularly works as a freelance scenographer in order to better finance his life as a plastic artist.
Born in Escher, he was nominated for the Edward Steichen Award in 2013 and 2019, as well as for the Prix d'Art Robert Schuman in 2019. in 2020, he received the Prix Arts et Lettres of the Institut Grand-Ducal. Distanz Verlag also recently published the monograph What Condition Our Condition Is In, which documents the last 15 years of Schumacher's work.
In any case, his works suggest an unbridled imagination, indeed, an almost childlike joy in putting together objects or whatever that do not actually belong together. In the process, tin cans, drinks bottles and/or cigarette butts can sometimes be, well … used. In addition to his impressive craftsmanship, Eric Schumacher also has a sense of humour.
