"Good tourism in the little things"

Where hard labour once took place, tourists now come to rest: the "Kabaisercher" of the Minett Trail preserve Luxembourg's industrial heritage. Simpleviu founder and "Gîtes" operator Philippe Freitas Morgado talks about his experiences in setting up a start-up company that aims to anchor sustainability in local tourism.

We meet Philippe Freitas Morgado in the "Floater" – a "Kabaischen" that appears to float above the water surface of the cooling basin of the former Dudelange steelworks without disturbing the aquatic ecosystem. Born from the collaboration between artist Franck Miltgen and M3 Architecture, the "Gîte" rests as a matrix-shaped mixture of sculpture and architecture in Dudelange's "Schmelz" neighbourhood.

Inside, the 32-year-old quickly repositions a plush dog enthroned in front of the panoramic view: Laughing sheepishly, he explains that he generally leaves the tidying up to the cleaning staff, but that he sometimes imagines little things differently. He visits the various accommodation units regularly, if only because he has found a book that might interest guests or a parlour game that they can help themselves to from already generously filled baskets. But the kitchen cupboards are also already stocked with the basics. Overnight guests should have no less of a shortage of spices and pasta than an exceptional view of the old water tower. According to Freitas Morgado, all of this is necessary to meet the high standards of Luxembourg's tourism sector.

In the wings of entrepreneurship

Philippe Freitas Morgado's time at school and university was characterised by travelling. "I used to write down all kinds of ideas when I was abroad. I kept telling myself, hey, this and that would also be cool in Luxembourg. This resulted in a huge list." Said list contained a considerable collection of contemporary "hype from big cities" that had not yet been taken up in Luxembourg at the time – including brunch concepts and "gîtes" in the spirit of the circular economy.
