Editorial - We're innovative – and that's precisely the problem

We wanted to be inclusive, not innovative. The fact that our podcast "1 cm" is nevertheless being hailed as an innovation says less about us than it does about journalism as a whole.

On 3 October, together with Maxime Toussaint, Head of Podcasts at the Lëtzebuerger Journal, and Christine Zimmer, Director of Info-Handicap, I presented our podcast 1 cm at the bfuture Festival in Bonn. For three days, everything in this German city on the Rhine revolves around constructive journalism and dialogue. Over the past four years, I'd only ever been there as an observer, and the conferences, panels and workshops had inspired me every single time. This time, it was us who received enthusiastic feedback from our listeners. They hadn't heard much about inclusive journalism this year.

For a year, we followed people with disabilities in their workplaces. We covered the full spectrum: from people working in professional inclusive workshops, to those who'd found a job in the open labour market, right through to those who'd set up their own businesses. The result is six podcast episodes in which a wide variety of people share their diverse experiences, whilst experts, politicians and employers also have their say.
