Fit 4 Start winner Essembl is a startup with an AI styling app, fully made in Luxembourg. In just six months and with zero marketing spend, the app has gained nearly half a million users. But the founders have much bigger ambitions.
"What do you think: would you let AI choose your wardrobe?, " asks Valentin Dufour, Essembl co-founder, in a promotional video on his Instagram channel which, at the time of writing, counted over 31,000 followers.
The use of AI amongst creatives has indeed been a point of focus lately. But the answer to Valentin’s question seems to have had a positive response so far, given the made-in-Luxembourg app has reached over 450,000 global users in just six months. As Valentin, age 26, explained in a recent interview with Lëtzebuerger Journal, the Essembl app requires that users upload photos of their own apparel, with integrated AI generating text descriptions about individual garments automatically.
From there, users can opt to create outfits, using pre-defined filters or by interacting with the AI chatbot, which asks questions concerning, for instance, the type of activity, weather, etc. The outfit images generated can be easily exported—as Valentin does for the team’s social media—but additionally, the app "explains why the outfit is a good match, and that’s really important, especially in the first phase—that the outfit actually makes sense".
