Ten countries are officially seeking to join the EU. The road is long and increasingly arduous — but for some, the finish line is in sight.

The European Economic Community, now the EU, was born out of the coming together of six Western European countries and has always had a vocation to expand. It has undergone a series of enlargements, the most spectacular of which was in 2004 with the Baltic States and several Central European countries formerly under Soviet domination, before reaching 27 Member States after the Brexit.
