After graduation, while studying, in addition to your regular job or to find your way back into society – employment as specialised animator at the SNJ entices with manageable hiring conditions. Sally and Diego report on their employment in Marienthal.
It is the warmest day of the week – the warmest day of July, as it turns out later – when we arrive in Marienthal. We are in a nature-protected area of the Natura 2000 zones. Under the blisteringly hot sun, we cross a small bridge under which the 49-kilometre-long Eisch, a tributary of the Alzette and invitingly cold, weaves its way towards the impressive buildings of the National Youth Service (SNJ). "The church is a monastery founded in the 13th century", reports Sarah Melmer, co-manager of the Marienthal site, pointing to the church a few metres away. Since 1977, the premises have been used by the SNJ and have been converted accordingly to offer a whole range of educational activities. More on this later.
In our search for a cool refuge, we pass a carpentry workshop, a so-called media room and a small stable. However, there is not a soul in sight, only a young woman sitting outside at a table under the trees, which probably provide the only shady spot on the entire site. Judging by her facial expression and relaxed posture, she seems to be taking a short break. "Due to the high temperatures, we have preemptively cancelled all activities", explains SNJ staff member Sarah as we walk across the site. These activities are normally not only offered but also organised, led and animated by trained staff. These people include Sally Offermann and Diego Prussen, who are waiting for us in a small room – the refuge of all tutors, with seating, a small kitchen and loads of files and smartphones.
