While consumers would appreciate seamless access to movies and series, the film industry warns that lifting geo-blocking restrictions risks destabilising financial structures that keep European productions afloat. While a truly borderless streaming experience sounds appealing, the reality is more complicated.
The following scenario: You settle in to stream that highly anticipated new movie you've been eager to watch, only to be met with the dreaded message: "This content is not available in your region." You’ve just been geo-blocked: a practice where streaming platforms restrict access to content based on your location.
An all-too-familiar experience for Mike Winter, president of Association luxembourgeoise de la presse cinématographique (ALPC). As an avid cinephile, he started uploading film reviews on YouTube eight years ago, and more recently he's been taking pen in hand to write reviews for Revue. In line with the professionalisation of his lifelong passion, Winter does not hesitate to spend some good money into various Video-on-Demand (VoD) services available in Luxembourg: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, the list goes on. "If I had to buy all the individual movies I consume, it would cost a fortune. So, I don't mind subscribing to streaming services – if I know everything is accessible."
