It seems like something out of another time: the dartboard, the skittle alley, the pool table – they may have remained in many typical Luxembourgish pubs, but the games have long since changed.
When granddad used to try his hand at the skittle alley, he could hardly have imagined that, in just a few years, these pastimes would evolve into proper sports with teams, associations, competitions, and tournaments, divided into leagues and sub-leagues. There is training, there is trembling, and the results are diligently recorded and sent to the association. The goal is to be promoted, to become champions, but never to be relegated. In some cases, such as carom billiards, the sport has even moved out of the café and into dedicated venues.
But despite all the seriousness, some things have remained: the sense of community, the love of the game, and sometimes even the pint…
