Bluetongue disease: damage in the millions
By Christian Block, Lex Kleren Switch to German for original article
The bluetongue disease has severely impacted livestock farmers in the second half of 2024. However, it is far from over – and the economic damage has already reached millions. But according to Agriculture Minister Hansen, compensation is not an option.
The almost 200 chairs in the hall of the Gilsdorf Lycée Technique Agricole (LTA) are already occupied fifteen minutes before the event begins. Nevertheless, more and more farmers are crowding into the hall, lining up along the walls and clustering around the door areas. They will spend a good three hours learning about bluetongue and epizootic haemorrhagic disease (EHD). These are the pathogens that have primarily caused problems for cattle and sheep farms in the past six months – or threaten to do so in the future. But above all, the evening will also be an opportunity to take stock after six months of bluetongue and put the sometimes traumatic experiences into words.
