Food inspections, livestock transport, animal welfare, epidemics: The Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA), which was founded in 2022, covers a wide range of tasks - and is to be given more opportunities to punish offences in the future. A review with its director, Dr Félix Wildschutz.

Dr Félix Wildschutz picks us up personally for the interview in the small waiting area of the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (ALVA). For just over two years, the veterinarian has headed the newly created authority, which brought together four departments from three ministries (see info box) in 2022. It is a new challenge for the early 60-year-old. Instead of working with 50 people, all of whom he knew personally, there are now almost three times as many employees. Restructuring the authority and adapting the procedures has been a priority in recent years. "Now it's about making it a whole and, above all, improving internal communication. This is a challenge that the directorate has set itself this year."
