PCOS: What the most common hormone disorder means for women

Although polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common hormonal disorder in women, the disease often goes unrecognised or is misdiagnosed. A dedicated doctor explains the dimensions of the syndrome while a young woman is still waiting for a definitive diagnosis.

When Emilie went through puberty, her body seemed to change in a different way to other girls. Emilie did get her period, but not every 28 days as usual, but at very irregular intervals. In addition, during her teenage years she suffered from severe skin blemishes, hair loss and she grew hair in places that are actually unusual for women, such as on her upper lip, stomach and chest. She also inexplicably gained a lot of weight. What bothered her most at this time, however, were severe migraine attacks. These occurred mainly when she was still taking the contraceptive pill, but subsided somewhat when she stopped taking it.
