More than a car: The automotive as a means of human expression and connection

Cars are an everyday experience, but what do they mean and represent beyond transportation? Although there is rising question of vehicular necessity on an ecological level, there is still a certain sentimentality that is present within car enthusiasm and ownership. Vehicular heritage, driving, and overall contact with the automotive, serve as a means of personal authenticity, nostalgia, and as a manner of human connection.

On questioning the necessity of motor vehicles as the primary source of mobility and transportation, Nathalie Hippert, head of city marketing of the Mondorf-les-Bains commune, states that there is incentive on lessening car usage: "I would not say that we dissuade people from using cars, but we want to encourage people to also use other forms of mobility." When asked about whether the commune has any promotion on trying to optimise this minimisation, Hippert explains that the commune promotes other, greener, alternatives such as the bicycle, the bus, and the Flex: a car sharing service. Therefore, facilitating public mobility and influencing the community in using their personal vehicles in instances of necessity.
