Luxembourg City markets: Up close

By Tom Herz

When we think about markets in Luxembourg City, most people immediately think of the "Stater Maart". Having rarely visited markets in recent years and mostly associating them with childhood memories of sunny summer days spent together with his family, street photographer Tom Herz decided to turn his lens toward this topic and document the market culture of Luxembourg City during its annual season from March to November.

While visiting the "Stater Maart" held twice-weekly in the heart of the city on Place Guillaume II and doing some research, I realized that during the spring and summer months, a multitude of different markets and flea markets take place throughout the city, ranging from the flea market at Place d'Armes to the monthly flea market at Glacis. At first glance, I expected little variation, assuming that the same stands would appear in the same spots and offer the same goods each time. However, after visiting the markets on several occasions, this impression quickly proved to be wrong. There is always something happening and every visit never feels the same twice. These markets emerge within the cityscape and constantly adapt to the changing dynamics of the urban environment and climate. Getting to know the different exhibitors, as well as the visitors ranging from regulars to newcomers, gradually revealed the richness and beauty of these important events. Something new is always unfolding and a good bargain is never far away. This experience has made me rethink my view of the city's markets, turning them into something I now genuinely enjoy and will continue to follow in the seasons to come.
