It's never too late to learn to read and write

Being able to read and write feels "normal", but is a major challenge for many people. Two years ago, we met five people on a basic course at the Université Populaire who had only learned this late in life. Today, they are one thing above all: more independent. This article is about them - and for them.

"I wish you the best…" Even before the course begins, Anne (all names of course participants have been changed) writes a greetings card for a friend's wedding. She wouldn't have been able to do this a short time ago. For the longest time in her life, she could neither read nor write well. In her parents' eyes, she belonged "in the kitchen". When she wanted to learn anyway, her parents kicked her out. That's why today, over 40 years later, she is taking a basic course at the adult education centre in Esch-sur-Alzette – and writing her first card at retirement age. Course instructor Danielle Rieff nods encouragingly and writes the words on the board after Anne has spelt them out. The others are in the room just in time for the start of the course.
