Exclusive: An extra 1.50 euros per hour – prison labour to be better paid
By Christian Block, Misch Pautsch Switch to German for original article
Prison work pays from two euros an hour. Too little, inmates have been saying for years. The government is now taking steps to improve the situation. However, the remuneration still falls far short of the expectations of the association that campaigns for the prisoner's interests – and that also means, for their prospects after release.
Work carried out in state prisons is to be better remunerated in future. In response to an enquiry from the Lëtzebuerger Journal, the Ministry of Justice confirmed last Wednesday that the hourly rate paid is to be increased "by a flat rate of 1.50 euros". A corresponding ministerial decree is due to be published this week.
Inmates have been waiting many years for better pay for prison work. In 2022, the previous coalition government of DP, LSAP and the Greens had held out the prospect of an increase. At the start of this legislative term, the CSV/DP government assured that it would honour this promise. With the planned decree, it is now implementing it.
