Behind the health and maternity insurance deficit

This Monday, a meeting of the social partners is being held to discuss the accounts of the health and maternity insurance scheme. A crucial meeting, since these accounts have been in the red since 2018. The Lëtzebuerger Journal has a closer look, in figures, at the health and maternity insurance scheme and the stakes of its financial situation.

What is health and maternity insurance?

Health and maternity insurance is one of the four pillars of the Social Security system, alongside pension insurance, long-term care insurance and accident insurance. It has the largest budget. Family benefits are also classified as part of social security, even though they are managed by the Caisse pour l'avenir des enfants (Children's Future Fund) under the supervision of the Ministry of Family Affairs.
