The social elections of 2024 corroborate a certain renewed interest in trade unions.

Some developments seem inescapable, irrepressible, unstoppable. Scientific advances and technical progress are among them – as is the decline in trade union membership, a phenomenon that seems inexorable because it is closely linked to the decline in the proportion of employees working in mass industries. Over the long term, Luxembourg has not escaped this trend, with the union membership rate falling from 50% in 1980 to 28% in 2019.
